Twon Brass Community in Bayesla Protest neglect by Oil Company

-By Victoria Opeyemi

Residents of Twon Brass in Bayelsa have frowned at acute neglect suffered over the years since oil exploration began in the community. They called on federal and state governments to prevail on the oil company to meet their demands.

Women, youths and other stakeholders in the community demonstrated to the company in order to express their grievances. They said people have not been employed despite massive retirement of workers from Agip, there has been no replacement.

The angry protesters pointed out that the company engaged people elsewhere to work in the terminal. They have written letter to Agip to notify the company for about one month without any response.

As part of their requests, they appeal to Agip to provide power for the community adding that it has been in total blackout without electricity.

The community said it will continue on the peaceful demonstration without resorting to violence until their demands are met.

However, the House of Representatives recently met with International Oil Companies (IOCs) challenging them to be responsible to their host communities.
