Delivering his address at the Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit at the opening ceremony, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State noted that the theme, “Breaking Barriers in the New Energy Era: Clean, Reliable, and Sustainable,” speaks to the urgency of the moment.
According to him, “We are witnessing a pivotal shift in how we generate, distribute, and consume energy. This transformation goes beyond new technologies; it is about ensuring every Nigerian has access to reliable power, a critical component of industrial growth, entrepreneurship, and improved quality of life.”
“For too long, unreliable power has hindered Nigeria’s economic potential. Lagos, as the nation’s economic hub, has experienced this challenge firsthand. But the decentralisation of the power sector presents a significant opportunity for us to take control of our energy future. By decentralising energy generation and distribution, we can harness alternative sources such as renewable energy and empower local stakeholders to drive innovation.”
The Governor was represented by the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Bolaji Ogunleye, said the shift is not just about technical solutions—it is about economic empowerment. Decentralisation allows stakeholders to meet the energy demands of industries, businesses, and citizens while reducing dependence on centralized grids that have historically struggled to keep up. It positions Lagos to become a smart, resilient, and energy-secure megacity.
Lagos is already investing heavily in renewable energy infrastructure to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and create cleaner air for future generations. Hence, the state is encouraging private sector partnerships through incentives that promote green practices and sustainable growth. This collaborative approach is essential to building an energy ecosystem that powers economic resilience and creates jobs.
“As we pursue cleaner energy solutions, sustainability must remain central. The energy system we build today must not only address current challenges but also be resilient enough to support future generations. This requires long-term policies that balance economic growth with environmental stewardship.”
The Governor made it known that Lagos’s vision for decentralisation is clear. It’s not just about keeping the lights on—it’s about powering growth, creating opportunities, and ensuring that every resident, from urban centers to rural areas, has access to affordable, reliable energy.
Sanwo-Olu charges stakeholders to see the summit as a call to action. Lagos is ready to lead the charge, innovate, and collaborate with all stakeholders for the benefit of our people and the prosperity of Nigeria. “Together, we can break the barriers to a cleaner, more reliable and sustainable energy future.”
