As part of activities to mark the World Maritime Day, forty youths from Eleme and Okrika communities in Rivers State have been trained in Maritime and offshore skills and safety.
Executive Director of the Charkin Maritime and Offshore Safety, Dr Charles Wami said training of the forty youths in Maritime skills is a boost to the Maritime sector.
He said the training reflects the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future.
“This graduation of forty youths is a great deal to the Maritime and Offshore sector. The idea is training people to have competence. The Sea job is not an all comers game. And for the graduates, now they can’t come and knock or barricade the gates of PHRC or TECHNOMOT demanding for sorts. Now they have been empowered especially, through a world class Maritime Academy. This should nit be taken for granted”, Dr Wami said.
The Community Relations Manager in the host communities Sir F.D Omeme said the training has empowered the youths in the communities and an accomplishment of a signed memorandum of understanding between the companies and the communities
“For us, if you teach people how to catch fish, you have done a lot. What Tecnomot has done in this passing out exercise in Charkins, training twenty youths in Welding and Fabrication, and another twenty youths in Crane Operation, is a source of empowerment to the community. This is an accomplishment to our signed MOU with the Okrika LGA and Eleme LGA as host communities to these companies”, Chief Meme said.
On his part, stakeholder of Eleme Community and Managing Director of WESHAM SERVICES, Prince Sunny-Nkpe while commending the trained youths in Eleme and Okrika communities of being of good behavior throughout the training, he said the skills has given the youths a new direction in life. He also commended the companies for empowering the youths and keeping to their Memorandum of Understanding. Prince Sunny Nkpe also said the training will reduce youth restiveness in the communities.
