The Minister of Power, Mr. Abubakar Aliyu, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment in ensuring that Nigerians have effective power supply.
Mrs. Margaret Oyinboade, Senior information Officer, Ministry of Power, made this known in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.
Oyinboade quoted the minister as saying this when he held a meeting with the Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Ihad Awad, in his office.
Aliyu said that in order to ensure stable power supply in the country, the Federal Government signed a power project deal with Siemens AG, a Germany-based firm in 2019.
“The deal which brings together Nigeria’s Ministry of Power, Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos), will see to the development of the power sector in Nigeria.
“The deal is to deliver up to 25,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the National grid in phases and expressed Federal Government’s desire for more of such partners,” he said.
Aliyu stated that the anticipated area of cooperation between Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the Nigerian Ministry of Power may include the provision of technical support in transmission and distribution networks existing into smart-grid, and the promotion of renewable energy system in the electricity sector both on and off grid.
Responding, the Egyptian Ambassador, Ihad Awad, said he foresees the manifestation of how Egypt and Nigeria will complement each other which will be demonstrated by the cooperation.
He praised the Nigerian Government’s effort to see improvement in the energy sector, adding that electricity is the engine of the development of any country.
Awad said that the Egyptian Embassy and Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy were working to ensure the realisation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Nigeria’s Ministry of Power on power supply.
