Nigeria’s Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, effective from July 2024.
The increment is line with the newly enacted National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, marks a significant step in boosting the welfare of corps members.
The approval detailed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission and signed by Chairman Ekpo Nta on September 25, 2024, follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the Minimum Wage Bill into law in July.
The legislation set Nigeria’s minimum wage at N70,000, sparking widespread anticipation of a corresponding adjustment in the stipends for NYSC members, which had previously been N33,000 since a wage hike in 2019.
“The increase is in line with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024,” NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.
She highlighted that the decision stems from an advocacy visit by NYSC Director General Yusha’u Ahmed to the commission’s chairman, where he advocated for improved welfare for corps members.
Ahmed expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the timely adjustment, stating that the raise would provide much-needed relief and motivate corps members to continue their service to the nation with renewed dedication.
The NYSC allowance increase comes as Nigeria grapples with inflation and economic challenges, making the wage adjustment a key policy move aimed at supporting young Nigerians as they contribute to national development.
