Honey quality is of immense importance to consumers. Globally, there are standards drawn up by countries against which honeys are measured. This is crucial to guard against adulterations and the proliferation of substances that may appear as honey but are not. For this reason, the Palynological Association of Nigeria (PAN) is organizing a symposium: Honey production and quality in Nigeria: Setting the standards, Nov 27, 2024 at 9:00 AM (West Africa Time).
The guest speaker is Prof Dražen Lušić, the current chair of the International Honey Commission (IHC). Other speakers who have vast experience in the subject matter including Prof P.A. Adeonipekun (palynologist and biostratigrapher, UNILAG), Prof R. Njokuocha (palynologist, University of Nigeria, Nsukka), Dr E.A. Orijemie (palynologist and environmental archaeologist, University of Ibadan), Dr Gbenga Aina (beekeeper and palynologist), Adeoye Bayo (Nutritional Biochemistry and Molecular Neuroscientist at Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria), Tunde Fabunmi (beekeeper) and Dr Miguel Maia of ApisMaia, Portugal.

The Palynological Association of Nigeria (PAN) organizes this symposium as a precursor to two major upcoming events namely (i) the physical honey standards workshop slated for January 2025 where experts can agree on production method(s) and quality to be recommended for any Nigeria sourced honey to the appropriate food regulatory agencies of the Nigerian government, and (ii) the 40th Anniversary of PAN scheduled for April 2025 with workshops on the application of palynology in paleoclimate reconstruction, aerobiology, human ecology and oil and gas (biostratigraphy) exploration techniques.
We look forward to a refreshing and educative Symposium.
Prof. P. A. Adeonipekun
President of PAN/Palynologist Unilag
