NAEE President Advocates Actions to Improve Sector

Professor Yinka Omorogbe, President of NAEE

The Nigerian Association for Energy Economics (NAEE) has advocated for more actions and policy implementation towards improving the energy sector.

The Chief Host and NAEE President, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, made the call during a virtual symposium to mark the 2020 World Energy Day celebration, with the theme, “Sustainable Energy Systems and Development in Nigeria – Options for the Future.”

“It has struck me that if we had got our energy right in Nigeria, we wouldn’t be in such a mess, because to add to the frustration, there is no light and low energy which is part of the demand of protesters. In the village, you find a lot of restive youth because of low energy.”

The sixth edition of the conference was supported by the International Association for Energy Economics and the Emerald Energy Institute Port Harcourt.

“Our challenge has to be to get out of these talking, we are tired of talking. We need to find a way to translate our ideas to reality to ensure that implementers start implementing things,” she said.

The pioneer president of NAEE and professor of Energy Economics, Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, in his recommendations supported the removal of subsidy for fossil fuel.

“There should be removal of subsidies for fossil fuel and promote the development of renewable energy, energy self-sufficiency, investment in energy infrastructure (improved grid stability, decentralized grids and distributed power generation).

The Executive Secretary of Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), Dr. Joy Ogaji, said there was a need for efforts to improve the energy needs towards attaining the Goal 7 of the sustainable energy by 2030 for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The moderator and Director General of Emerald Energy Institute, Prof. Chijioke Nwaozuzu, said the discussants presented the issues on the front burner and hope that the recommendations will be used for a better energy sector.
