Nigeria’s Gas Output Rises By 3.21% to 172BSCF

Nigeria’s gas output grew by 3.21 per cent to 172.243 billion standard cubic feet (SCF) in November 2024, from 166.894 billion SCF recorded in the previous month, according to latest gas data released by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).

This brings the country’s daily average output to 5.741 billion SCF (BSCF) of gas in November, compared with 5.384 BSCF in October.

The NNPCL, in its gas production and utilisation data for November 2024, stated that Associated Gas (AG) accounted for 65.31 per cent of total gas output in November 2024, with 112.499 billion SCF (BSCF); while Non-Associated Gas (NAG) accounted for 34.69 per cent of production, with 59.744 billion SCF.

The national oil firm further stated that of the total gas produced in the country, 93.9 per cent was utilised, while 6.1 per cent was flared.

Specifically, it noted that 161.711 billion SCF of gas was utilised in November 2024, rising by three per cent from 156.933 billion SCF utilised in October 2024; while 10.561 billion SCF of gas was flared in November, rising by 0.84 per cent compared with 10.473 billion SCF of gas flared in the previous month.

In its analysis of gas utilised in the month under review, the NNPCL reported that 10.341 billion SCF was used as fuel gas; 67.267 billion SCF was utilised by the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas; 4.893 billion SCF was utilised by the Escravos Gas to Liquid project, while Natural Gas Liquids/Liquefied Petroleum Gas (NGL/LPG) used up 2.519 billion SCF of gas.

It further stated that domestic gas sales by the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), among others used up 23.426 billion SCF, while 51.427 billion SCF of gas was reinjected and utilised as gas lift make-up.

The NNPCL disclosed that Shell Nigeria recorded the highest gas output in the month under review, with 41.815 billion SCF of gas, rising by 18.98 per cent when compared with the 35.143 billion SCF produced in October 2024.

Mobil followed with 26.865 billion SCF; Total Energies produced 20.106 billion SCF of gas; Chevron – 20.007 billion SCF; while Star Deepwater recorded gas output of 13.344 billion SCF from Agbami Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO); and Total Upstream recorded 13.230 billion SCF of gas from Akpo FPSO.

The NNPCL identified the least gas producers in the month under review to include Agip Energy and Natural Resources (AENR), Amni Petroleum and Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), with zero gas output respectively; while NNPC Exploration and Production-Chevron Nigeria Limited Joint Venture and Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company produced 41 million SCF and 42 million SCF of gas respectively.

The highest offenders in terms of gas flaring in the month under review, according to the report, were the NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL)/Seplat Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) joint venture; Seplat Petroleum Development Company (SPDC); NEPL-Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) joint venture; and the NEPL, from Oil Mining Leases (OML) 86/88, with all of them flaring 100 per cent of their respective gas outputs.
