…Mojisola Meranda takes over as new Speaker
It what looks like a drama, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, citing multiple statutory and financial infractions. Obasa’s impeachment comes on the heels of allegations of misappropriating public funds, including a reported N43.5 billion withdrawn for backup vehicles for lawmakers.
Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, has taken over as the new speaker. Meranda, a former chief whip of the House, is expected to bring stability and transparency to the Assembly.
This development is not Obasa’s first brush with controversy. In 2020, he was accused of misappropriating public funds and was even questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Obasa has consistently denied all allegations against him.
The impeachment of Speaker Obasa sends a strong message that the Lagos State House of Assembly will not tolerate corruption or financial impropriety. As the investigation into Obasa’s activities continues, Lagosians await further details on the allegations against the former speaker.
It is not clear if the impeachment will be challenged in the court leading to a potential protracted legal battle.
