The Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) is embarking on a renewable energy revolution with the installation of solar-powered streetlights, a project led by the visionary Chairman Prince Isaac Umejuru.
In a region historically dependent on traditional power sources, this initiative marks a significant leap toward both enhanced security and environmental sustainability.
The solar streetlight project, which covers over 50 strategic locations across the Local Government Area, is part of Prince Umejuru’s broader strategy to address security challenges while reducing the Council’s carbon footprint. With installation expected to be completed within 10 days, the project is on a fast track to becoming a game-changer for ONELGA.
At a recent inspection of the project’s progress, Prince Umejuru highlighted the dual benefits of the solar streetlights. “This initiative not only improves security by providing continuous illumination for surveillance but also demonstrates our commitment to sustainable development,” he stated. “We are moving away from expensive, pollutant-laden energy sources toward a cleaner, more cost-effective solution.”
The economic benefits are as compelling as the environmental ones. The switch from diesel and petrol generators to solar energy is projected to drastically reduce the Council’s energy costs, providing financial relief at a time when fuel prices continue to rise. These savings can be redirected into other critical infrastructure projects, furthering ONELGA’s development goals.
The community has lauded the solar streetlight project, recognizing it as a bold step in the right direction.
As ONELGA prepares to enter a new era of sustainability, the solar initiative sets a precedent for other local governments seeking to balance security needs with environmental responsibility.
With the completion of this groundbreaking project on the horizon, the future for ONELGA is looking both brighter and greener, reflecting the Council’s commitment to creating a safer, more sustainable environment for all.
