Twenty-eight grid-connected electricity generation plants across the country generated a total of 3,171GWh of electricity in May 2024, a 12 percent increase from 2,833GWh generated in April 2024, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.
According to NERC, these 28 grid-connected power plants recorded only a 34 percent availability factor in the month under review, even when they have an installed capacity of generating 13,371MW.
Data released by NERC on the operational performance of power plants indicated that the largest power producers which include Egbin ST, Delta GS, Kanji, Shell’s Afam VI, Zungeru, Odukpani, Shiroro, Jebba, Okpai, Azura IPP, and Geregu plants generated only 2,531GWh, which represents 79.82percent of the energy generated in May 2024.
Smaller plants including Afam IV -V, Sapele ST, Olorunsogo NIPP, Omotosho NIPP, Sapele GT NIPP, Ihovbor NIPP, Geregu NIPP, Omotosho, Olorunsogo, Ibom Power, River NIPP, Omoku, Trans Amadi, Paras, Taopex Energy, Mepp and Dadin Kowa generated a total of 640GWh being 20.18 percent of energy generated during the period.
Egbin ST and Zungeru plants generated the highest power of 478GWh and 401GWh, while Azura IPP trailed behind with 301 GWh in May 2024, while Alaoji NIPP, Ihovbor NIPP and Dadin Kowa generated zero GWh of electricity, from their installed capacity of 472MW, 450MW and 40MW respectively.
